Garage planner: check that your cars fit, doors and all

A car that fits a garage on paper may not fit once you need to open its doors. Draw the garage at its real inside size and park your vehicles in it before you build or buy.

Garages and garage doors

Draw the garage like any room and set its type to Garage. With the door tool, choose a garage door (about 2.5 m) or a double garage door (about 5 m) and click the wall; sectional doors open upwards, so the plan shows their track under the ceiling instead of a swing.

No walls? Place a carport: a roof on posts that cars park under.

Vehicles at real sizes

  • Small car, saloon, SUV and van, with mirrors included in the width.
  • Motorbike, bicycle and trailer.
  • Select a car to see the space its doors need to open: blue where there is room, red where a wall or shelf is in the way.

Rules of thumb

Sizes vary by car and by country; measure your own car, including mirrors, and type its size in the panel.

  • Single garage: about 3 × 5.5 m inside; 3.5 m wide is comfortable.
  • Double garage: about 6 × 6 m inside.
  • Leave 70–80 cm beside the driver's door, and room behind a hatchback or van to open it.

Questions

Will it warn me if the car does not fit?

Yes. A vehicle that crosses a wall, cannot open a door on either side, or has no room behind for its rear doors is outlined in red, and the panel says why.

Can I add my own car?

Place the nearest vehicle and type the exact width (with mirrors) and length of your car in the panel.

Does the garage count in the floor area?

Yes, a garage drawn with walls is a room. Set its type to Garage to tell it apart; a carport is not a room and does not count.
