Small bedroom layouts that work
Practical layouts for small bedrooms — where to put the bed, how to fit storage and a desk, and which furniture sizes leave room to move.

A small bedroom is usually somewhere between 7 and 10 m². With a few rules you can fit a bed, storage and sometimes a desk without the room feeling cramped.
Layout 1: bed in the corner
Push a single or small double bed into a corner, along the longest wall. You lose access from one side, but gain a clear floor area for a wardrobe or desk. Works well for children's rooms and guest rooms.
Layout 2: bed centred on the wall opposite the door
The classic double-bed layout: headboard against the wall facing the door, a narrow bedside table on each side. You need about 60 cm on each side of the bed, so the room should be at least the bed width plus 120 cm wide.
Layout 3: storage wall
Put a wall of wardrobes along the shortest wall, often beside the door, and the bed on the opposite side. Sliding doors need no swing space, which can save 60–90 cm compared with hinged doors.
Fitting a desk
- The space under a window is often wasted; a shallow desk (50–60 cm deep) fits there well.
- A wall-mounted folding desk works when the room is only occasionally an office.
Furniture choices that help
- A bed with drawers underneath replaces a chest of drawers.
- Bedside shelves fixed to the wall instead of tables.
- Mirrors on wardrobe doors make the room feel larger.
Try it before you move anything
Draw the room with its real size, door and window, then try the layouts with your actual bed size. The bedroom template is a starting point, and space needed around furniture has the clearances.
